People trying to raise money for charity will walk, run, bike and even dance for hours, but very few of them will attempt to sketch for hours. Don’t tell that to legendary Marvel Comics artist John Romita Jr., though, because he’s about to try to break his own 48-hour world record with a sketching marathon to benefit a cancer charity.
Romita’s best known for his work on things like The Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil, Wolverine and Kick-Ass, but he’s also apparently a sketching marathoner. When his niece Jordan, then just 2 years old, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2002, Romita set a Guinness World Record with 48 hours of continuous cartooning, doing sketches and signing autographs in exchange for donations to help fund her medical care.
“My niece has survived. She was one of only six children to survive this horrible disease,” Romita said. “Ten years later she’s a beautiful 12-year-old girl, but she has special needs, so we are attempting to beat that last marathon by two hours.”
Romita will begin his effort at 11 a.m. Friday, May 4, in the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas, and will attempt to sketch and sign continuously until the afternoon of Sunday, May 6. Head sketches are available for a $50 donation, and signatures (up to 25 of them) are available for a $25 donation. Romita’s also putting together a limited-edition lithograph featuring Thor, Captain America, the Hulk and Spider-Man to sell at the event.
